CANON CLOSES THE PRICE GAP ON LENSES

At any point in time there are a lot of very good reasons why photographers should buy from local dealers.

Inspection before delivery, warranty and service issues, the ability to try before you buy, advice and troubleshooting support are just a few of these.

When you combine this with the ideal of helping to keep local people employed it makes a pretty strong case for sticking to the principal of buying local. Having said that there is a point where the price differential becomes a valid consideration and despite our vested interest we at Team Digital accept that.

Thankfully Canon have as well and have dropped the prices dramatically on a range of lenses so that in many cases they now enjoy parity with overseas pricing. In some cases there may still be a pricing differential of 5% to 10% but surely the benefits of buying local are worth more than that. Below are some comparative prices showing the extent of the reductions.

D700 – NIKON’S GREAT ALLROUNDER

When we first handled the new Nikon D700 we had difficulty categorising it - Was it an enthusiast's camera or a backup (or indeed frontline camera) for wedding and portrait photographers or was it more of a specialist unit for low light events or confined shooting locations?

In the end we decided it was a great allrounder that would appeal to many photographers because of its flexibility as well as its unique capabilities. Features at a glance:

  • 12.1 – Megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor with sensing area of 36.0 x 23.9mm
  • Sensitive range of ISO 200 to 6400
  • Continuous shooting at up to 5 frames per sec.
  • Nikon’s 51 point AF system
  • Scene recognition system for optimum autofocus, auto exposure and auto white balancing detection

Pop in to 268 Lord St East Perth and get a feel for the D700 or call us and we will be happy to drop one out for you to play with for the day.

BUNKER BAY ROUNDUP

The third annual Bunker Bay AIPP conference was held on the 16th to the 18th September and according to many who attended was the best yet.

Some 60 attendees enjoyed high class and stimulating presentations from photojournalist Steve Dupont, 2007 winner of the AIPP Wedding Album of the Year Yervant Zanazanian and AIPP Victorian Wedding Photographer of the Year 2008 Rob Hammond. Talented Filmmaker Lizzi Tadic was also on hand to share her fascinating documentary on self liberated Umoja women of Northern Kenya’s Samburu.

Team Digital was represented at the conference by Ben Walton and Trevor Donetta who wholeheartedly endorsed the comments of the other attendees.

CAPTURE ONE 4 PRO – Puts the Photographer in control

Newly architected Capture One 4 Pro allows photographers to enhance and develop RAW digital files with excellent colour and detail reproduction.

Unlike other imaging software, Capture One Pro does not enforce an arbitrary workflow. Rather it enables you to customize your menu, build the interface and customise palettes to best suit your work style or the particular assignment.

New or enhanced features include:

  • Lens enhancement tools solve distortion, sharpness falloff, light falloff and can produce customisable vignetting for creative effects.
  • Selective colour provides an intuitive toolset for customising image colours to perfection.
  • All new skin tone tool allows photographers to easily set and reproduce skin tones shot under a variety of light conditions even without using a grey card.
  • Redesigned 'Styles' feature enables photographers to explore and create unique “looks” and to reproduce them consistently with ease.

Release of Capture One 4 Pro is scheduled for late October 2008 and provides for a free upgrade for Capture One Pro customers.

See our “Coming Events” section of this newsletter for the dates and details of the upcoming Applications Training session and Information Evening on Capture One 4 Pro with Canadian Guru Walter Borchenko.

PHASE ONE P65+, TOP OF THE CROP

The Phase One P65 + released at Photokina in September operates at a capture rate of 1 frame per second with a resolution of 60.5 megapixels which puts it squarely at the top of the tree in terms of image quality. It is the first digital back and camera system to take advantage of the new sensor + design and is the worlds first full frame capture system based on actual 645 film format.

BUT WHY THE NEED TO UPGRADE?

Photographers need real reasons to upgrade beyond 39 megapixel digital backs. Certainly real value includes higher resolution but also requires new functions, faster operation, higher quality through expanded sensitivity, increased dynamic range, better results in the studio or on location and a better long-term investment.

Some of the improvements resulting from the new Sensor+ technology include:

  • Scaleable pixel and file size
  • Higher sensitivity & dynamic range
  • Increased flexibility of operation and for capture
  • Improved capture rates

For full specifications, delivery and pricing please contact either Trevor, Ben, Peter or Pat or drop into 268 Lord St East Perth where any of out team members will be happy to help.

Meet the New MacBook Pro

The ever-surprising people from Apple have managed to excel again with the latest revision of their MacBook Pro 15" Laptop. Instead of an 'Aluminium Look' the new laptop is carved out of a solid piece of aluminium. This means less parts and more reliability.

While it's sporty new looks and hi-tech construction may well make your eyes water it's what's under the hood that really counts in a professional-level notebook. The MacBook Pro doesn't disappoint. Inside the sleek case an Intel Core 2 Duo processor hums at speeds up to 2.8GHz which when teamed with a 1066MHz frontside bus and up to 6MB of shared L2 cache enables the MacBook Pro to run applications faster than ever before.

Come and see the sleek new design, grunty horse-power and glossy screen for yourself, just drop in to our showroom next week and see our new demo MacBook Pro 15".

APPLE’S TIME MACHINE MAKES BACKUP A BREEZE

One of the key strengths of the Apple operating system is its imbedded security, data protection and its resistance to infiltration by unwanted visitors. Your data can be further protected against corruption and loss by utilising the new Time Machine feature which takes the headache out of the backup process.

Time Machine can keep an up-to-date copy of everything on your Mac - applications, digital photos, music, movies, TV shows and documents. Now if ever you need to you can easily go back in time and view your files as they were or restore them to your hard drive.

Time machine is different to other applications in that it not only keeps a spare copy of every file, it remembers how your system looked on a given day.

To start using Time Machine all you have to do is connect an external drive to your Mac. When you attach it, you're asked if you want it to be a Time Machine drive and if you say 'yes', Time Machine then takes care of everything else. You will never have to worry about backing up again. Every hour of every day an incremental backup of your Mac is made automatically as long as your backup drive is attached.

Apple's Time Capsule is a purpose built device that is ideal as a Time Machine backup destination. It not only offers storage capacity of 500GB or 1TB, but provides wireless networking capabilities as well. For less than $450 a Time Capsule represents cost effective insurance.

Please feel free to contact David Johnson at the Team Digital showroom on 9328 3377 for further help in getting started or to purchase an external drive.

NEW GENERATION EPSON 7900 & 9900

Late November should see the arrival of the first of the new generation printers into the Team Digital warehouse. The 24 inch Stylus Pro 7900 and 44 inch 9900 will be Epson’s first 10 colour printers and will be equipped with a revolutionary new pigment ink technology- Epson UltraChrome HDR (High Dynamic Range).

What will this mean for the professional image maker? Reduced graininess in skin tone areas; smoother tonal gradation from shadows to highlights; excellent short term colour stability and outstanding long term lightfastness, highly accurate colour control with neutral black and white and high gloss levels on water resistant prints.

We are currently compiling an ALERT LIST of customers who would like to be notified as soon as the new printers hit the floor. Please contact any of our staff on 9268 3377 to be included on the list or for further details and indicative pricing on the new Epsons.

BIG PRICE DROP FOR BIG BERTHA

The latest news flash from Epson HQ is that they have repositioned the price of their flagship 64” wide 11880 Stylus Pro Printer by dropping the recommended retail price by a whopping $5500.

Given the fluctuations in the exchange rate we are not certain just how long the new price will apply, so if you are thinking large format, now may be the time to act.
