Hot off the press is the news that the new Nikon D3s will be with us before Christmas with a raft of improvements on the Nikon D3, in itself a benchmark camera. This is a camera for the photographer that wants a genuine “all in one” tool that is equally competent in either still or movie mode. As a movie camera the Nikon D3s ticks lots of boxes. In High-Sensitivity Movie Mode it operates from ISO 6400 to Hi which is ISO 102400 equivalent. It has in-camera movie editing functions including capture of still images, stereo sound via external microphone and Contrast-detect AF in tripod mode. It also incorporates a dedicated Live View Button, flicker reduction and the capacity to zoom into a designated magnification by pressing the centre button of the Multi Selector. Some of the other goodies built into the Nikon D3s include:
As to how the camera feels and functions we will just have to wait until late November when we can get our hands on one. Pricing details should also be available later this month for those wishing to secure a Nikon D3s from the first shipment. NIKON STRENTHENS NIKON DX NIKKOR RANGE
Nikon have further strengthened their Nikon DX Nikkor lineup with the addition of a new AF-S DX NIKKOR 85mm f3.5G ED VR LENS to be released late November. The lens will be relatively light and reasonably priced to suit entry level and mid level digital SLR users. The 85mm incorporating Vibration Reduction has been specifically designed to promote the enjoyment of close-up photography amongst enthusiasts. Full specs and pricing are not yet to hand. PHASE ONE 645DF CAMERA
On the 28th September 2009 Phase One, a world leader in open-platform medium format camera systems, announced the release of the Phase One 645DF camera. Team Digital has combined with the AIPP to present “Masterpiece Portrait Series 2009” a one day workshop at the Subiaco Arts Centre on the 4th November. The morning session will feature three of Western Australia’s most awarded portrait photographers, Garry Sarre, Stefanie King and Rick Syme as they set about lighting, composing and capturing their subject. The format will be highly educational and will have added interest as each photographer will work with the same subject and the same lighting options with the final results reflecting their various styles. In the afternoon our photographers return to process their images on screen so that the audience can gain an insight into how each photographer prepares their files to be print-ready. Images will be printed and the audience encouraged to interrogate the photographers at the end of the day. This is a “not to be missed” opportunity for photographic enthusiasts, students and professional photographers who are looking to build on their skills.
We have a total capacity of only 120 for this workshop which unfortunately if you haven't already registered is now SOLD OUT, visit our website or blog regularly for other event details. ELINCHROM RANGER QUADRA – LIGHTENS THE LOAD |

Apple News |

Apple's latest incarnation of their Mac OS X System Software has hit the ground running. Within just one month of release, according to some internet statistics sites, 18% of Macintosh computers browsing the internet are already running Snow Leopard.
If you use your Apple computer for business, or other essential tasks you should take the extra extra cautious approach and schedule upgrading to the next big cat in about four weeks time. However, except for a few minor upgrade issues, most Snow Leopard early adopters have reported smooth, if not seamless upgrades.
"So why bother upgrading to Snow Leopard?", you may ask. Snow Leopard (Mac OS 10.6) promises to be even more stable and robust than Leopard (Mac OS 10.5). Apple have spent over a year making sure that their system is ready for prime time and will provide the kind of solid computer experience people expect from a modern, unix-based operating system.
Snow Leopard is also a platform for the future. It has seen nearly all it's innards converted to 64-bit (compared to 32-bit in OS 10.5). What does 64-bit mean? For people using memory-intensive programs it allows software to break free from the 4GB memory limits and process information around more efficiently. In the long run this will mean memory intensive software will perform better.
Snow Leopard is loaded with under-the-hood enhancements. The new features are limited to just a small set of refinements. This conservative approach, by Apple to adding new features will ensure that after your system upgrade your computer is as usable as ever.
You may however spot some specific enhancements to Snow Leopard after you upgrade. These include: A faster more responsive Finder, New features for Exposé and Stacks, quicker Time Machine backup, faster wake and shutdown (up to twice the speed of Leopard), a saving of up to 7GB of disk space, an innovative Chinese character input system and faster web browsing with Safari 4.
For only $39 as an upgrade from Leopard (Mac OS 10.5) the benefits are easy to see. If you don't already have Leopard (10.5), don't despair, Apple have an all-in-one pack called Mac Box Set that includes Snow Leopard together with the latest iLife '09 and iWork '09. Before upgrading make sure your computer meets the Snow Leopard requirements. The main requirement for Snow Leopard is that your Mac has an Intel processor. See all the System Requirement details for Snow Leopard here on the Apple site. http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html
If you are interested in all the Snow Leopard details, see Apple's Mac OS X webpage. http://www.apple.com/macosx/
System Requirements for Mac Box Set
http://www.apple.com/macboxset/requirements.html
Snow Leopard has a big cousin, Snow Leopard Server that brings the benefit of the refined 64-bit redesign to Apple's powerful server platform. Snow Leopard server, up to twice as fast as Leopard Server, starts from $699.

Lower Clock Speed, But Faster
How can Apple claim the new Mac Pro is faster than the previous model yet the base model runs at a lower clock speed?
The New Nehalem Mac Pro comes in 2.26 GHz and 2.66 GHz flavours, the last Mac Pro came in 2.66 GHz and faster configurations, why are the clock speeds of the new Mac Pro computers lower? The short answer is the Nehalem processors do more on each clock cycle. Think of a trained brick layer compared with an apprentice, how many bricks will each lay, properly, in an hour? Well the new 'Nehalem' processor is like the pro brickie, who gets more done with each tick of the clock. So, though the computer clock in a 'Nehalem' Mac Pro is running fractionally slower than on the previous Mac Pro, it can get a whole lot more done.
Faster Computer, Less Electricity
How can the new Mac Pro process more, faster than ever, yet consume less electricity?
A number of strategies to manage power and increase efficiency in the processor of the new Mac Pro provides performance on demand. Designed and produced by Intel, the Nehalem processor uses: dynamic scalability, managed cores, threads, cache, interfaces, and power to achieve a new level of energy efficiency. In every-day terms, unused units within the central processor of the computer shut down when not in use which saves power. So, even though the new Mac Pro gets more done, in less time, because of the intelligent way power is managed inside the chip it consumes less energy than its predecessor.
Maximising Mac Pro Memory Throughput
How can 3 be better than 4?
A curious fact about the new Mac Pro is that when memory modules are installed as a set of 3 (for 4 core) or 6 (for 8 core) then memory throughput is triple-channel whereas when installed in sets of 4 (or 8) memory throughput is only dual-channel. This means if your main applications are throttled back by memory throughput then sets of 3 (or 6) memory modules are the way to go as that way you could get up to 50% more memory throughput.
Two Reasons To Get An 8-Core
Why might I choose to buy an 8-core anyway when having 4-cores is fast enough?
Besides extra processing power, the next main benefit of the 8-core Nehalem Mac Pro over the 4-core, is the number of memory slots. The 8-core Mac Pro has 8 memory slots, so the current maximum RAM for the Mac Pro is 32GB (8 x 4GB). This means that should you need to run Photoshop on big images and keep Bridge, InDesign, Illustrator and Acrobat Pro open then an 8-core might be for you. Even if you currently only lust after 16GB of RAM, as the 2GB RAM modules are cheaper (currently $96 each compared with $430) you can wipe out the cost difference in cores by buying the cheaper memory modules.
Video Rendering Speed
How much faster is a current generation 8-core Mac Pro over the previous for Video Applications?
According to Barefeats the new Nehalem processor Mac Pro runs After Effects up to 45% faster than the previous Mac Pro, and Compressor up to 29%. That will translate into SUBSTANTIAL savings on rendering your video projects.
64-bit and Snow Leopard
Why would I choose to load Snow Leopard and boot into 64-bit mode when my main applications are still 32-bit?
Mac Performance Guide reports that even running 32-bit applications (software not yet optimised for 64-bit) they have observed performance of up to 30% over running on Leopard. So you might get a boost from 64-bit sooner than you think (even if you are running Photoshop CS4).
32-Bit In 64-Bit Mode
How could a 32-bit application run faster when the OS is booted in 64-bit mode?
This is really another Snow Leopard question :) Because Snow Leopard has been re-written under the hood as 64-bit many of the operating system operations, like accessing the disk drive, handling memory and other input-output has benefited from a performance boost. That's why some of the software you are already running can benefit from 64-bit mode, if compatible, perhaps right away!

Printing News |

It is clear from our conversations with customers that many are hungry for more knowledge and information on the art of inkjet printing. As most of us appreciate the image you see on your screen is not always replicated in the final print which can be frustrating and result in a lot of wasted material. Furthermore the variety of materials and surfaces is mind boggling so that choosing the right product and then correcting for it can present new challenges.
Team Digital with the support of Epson are presenting two workshops on Saturday the 31st October that are designed to help enthusiasts and entry level professionals to up skill in these important areas of inkjet printing.
Workshop 1 (AM) introduces the concepts of colour management and covers the fundamentals necessary for extracting great images from your Epson inkjet printer.
Workshop 2 (PM) deals with printing on various materials including fine-art papers, canvas, generating and using profiles and how to print images for exhibition purposes. The cost of each workshop is $45 or $69 for those attending both.
Phone Jenny on (08) 9328 3377 to secure your seat or visit www.teamdigital.com.au for further details.

Anyone buying an Epson wide format printer (3880 and above) from Team Digital between the 1st November and the 24th December 2009 will be entitled to attend free of charge one of Team Digital’s accredited two day training courses normally costing $675. Team Digital is an authorised Adobe training centre and regularly runs courses in Photoshop (basic to Intermediate), Photoshop Masterclass and Indesign. Consult the training page on our website at www.teamdigital.com.au for more details on the courses we conduct.

Welcome back David…..
Long standing customers of Team Digital will be delighted to know that our I.T. guru David Johnson has returned from his seven month extended leave in the UK where he has been holidaying with his wife and children. David decided late last year that it was time his young family were exposed to the wonders of the wider world and using London as a base conducted short travel sorties to a variety of UK and European destinations such as Isle of Wight, Canterbury, Bath, Bristol, North Wales, Lincoln and more.
Refreshed and ready to go David is keen to assist customers new and old with their hardware and software needs and to provide the support and advice he is famous for in terms of system design and installation. Good to have you back DJ.

At Team Digital we are aware of the need to make ourselves more accessible to our customers and for that reason have decided that from the 7th November 2009 we will open on Saturdays from 9:00am to 1:00pm. This extended trading will continue until Christmas at which time we will review our ongoing policy in accordance with customer demand. We take this opportunity to remind everyone that our late closing on Fridays (6:00pm) and early opening on Mondays (8:00am) will continue in order to accommodate the special needs of our weekend hire customers.

The 2009 Western Australian Professional Photographer of the Year Awards (WAPPAS) were again a showcase of everything that is great about WA photography. Local photographers lack nothing in comparison to their Eastern States counterparts as is regularly evidenced by their success at the national awards each year (APPAS). This year the standard appeared very high and the winners of the respective categories were most deserving of their awards. There can only be one Photographer of the year however and this year that honour went to Lynette Hewitt who also won the portrait photographer of the year category. Congratulations to all entrants for maintaining the high standards we have come to expect and to all award winners for raising the bar.
Yep we now have our own blog at www.teamdigitalwordpress.com.au which gives us even more ways of keeping in touch with our customers. Its another way of letting you all know what’s new from the manufacturers and about all the great educational events we have coming up. Most importantly it is a means by which you can tell us what you think, be it in regards to our various events, the quality of our service or what your needs are so that we can tailor our activities accordingly. Why not Blog us and give us your thoughts we would be most grateful to have your feedback.
