NEW LENS FOR THE CANON RANGE & JUST IN TIME FOR XMAS
Canon is about to roll out four new lenses over the coming months which will not only expand the range but will further extend image capturing opportunities for the professional photographer and the keen amateur. A brief overview of each is provided below.
EF8-15mm f/4L Fisheye lens
The EF8-15mm f/4L fisheye lens is the world’s first fisheye zoom lens that functions as a circular fisheye and full frame fisheye for full-frame sensor, interchangeable lens SLR/DSLR cameras. It is perfect for high-end enthusiast and professional photographers wanting to produce unique and creative effects. The lens replaces the EF15mm f/2.8 fisheye lens and features a newly-designed two-group zoom optical system with a zoom range of 8-15mm. The short minimum focusing distance of 15 cm will give a new meaning to close-up shots.
ETA January 2011.

EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 L IS
The robust EF70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens has been designed to satisfy the needs of the serious photographer, offering high-performance and quality regardless of the shooting condition. The new lens boasts the best optical performance in Canon’s telephoto zoom lens range of 70-300mm, achieving high-resolution, high-contrast images and reduced chromatic aberration thanks to an additional UD element. Optimized lens design and lens coatings will minimize flare and ghosting. The EF70-300mm lens offers expanded user options with a close focusing distance (1.2m) providing increased versatility when composing and framing your shot. Operability and durability have also increased with the inclusion of full-time manual focus and the acceptance of an optional accessory tripod collar. The EF70-300mm lens also promises to withstand the demands of professional use with a new mechanical construction designed for high durability and rigidity, as well as improved dust- and water-proofing.
ETA October 2009.

EF300mm f/2.8L IS II USM and EF400mm f/2.8L IS II USM
Both new super-telephoto lenses offer improved optical performance, achieving high resolution, high-contrast images and reduced chromatic aberration thanks to additional fluorite elements and the extraordinary dispersion lenses not used in previous models. The lenses are significantly lighter, by a staggering 1kg for the EF400 and over 300g for the EF300, making them much easier to carry in the field and to keep still while shooting. Closer focusing distance on both new lenses offers increased versatility when composing and framing your shot. They offer the shortest focusing distance in the large-aperture 300mm class at 2.0m and in the 400mm class at 2.7m. A new Image Stabilization function gives the equivalent effect of a shutter speed approximately four full stops faster, allowing photographers to shoot in even lower lighting conditions.
ETA December 2010.

Extender EF1.4x III and EF2x III
These extenders serve as accessories to all EF lenses and are successors to the EF1.4x II and EF2x II. They are designed to complement the performance of the new super-telephoto lenses with higher Auto Focus (AF) accuracy. The new design results in reduced chromatic aberration and less flare and ghosting.
NEW NIKON LENSES REFLECT SOME SERIOUS R&D
If Canon has been busy developing new product then so have the engineers at Nikon, with four new lenses that will raise the bar in terms of precision and expanded photographic opportunities.

AF-S 85mm F1.4 G
High performance FX-format f/1.4 medium-telephoto lens is perfect for portraits, low-light applications offering beautiful Bokeh (background blur) and outstanding picture quality. Use of Nano Crystal Coat further reduces ghosting and interior flare across a wide range of wavelengths for greater image clarity. The lens has been optimized for edge-to-edge sharpness on both FX and DX-format.
ETA September 2010.

AF-S 24-120mm F4 G ED VR
Compact and versatile 5x standard zoom lens with f/4 maximum aperture, this lens will be perfect for landscapes, portraits, weddings and distant subjects. Offers a constant maximum aperture to maintain exposure settings throughout the entire zoom range and VR II Image Stabilization.
Vibration Reduction and the fact that the lens is engineered specifically for each VR NIKKOR lens, enables handheld shooting at up to 4 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible. Two Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements offer superior sharpness and color correction by effectively minimizing chromatic aberration, even at the widest aperture setting. The Nano Crystal Coat further reduces ghosting and interior flare across a wide range of wavelengths for greater image clarity.
ETA October 2010.

AF-S 28-300mm f3.5-5.6 ED VR
A versatile 10.7x zoom lens with ED glass and VR II image stabilization that offers a broad focal length range that’s perfect for travel, landscapes, portraits and distant subjects. Two Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements provide superior sharpness and color correction by effectively minimizing chromatic aberration. The lens can be focussed to 18 inches at any focal length and its three Aspherical Lens Elements virtually eliminates chromatic and other aberrations, even at wide apertures.
ETA: September 2010.
AF-S 55-300mm f4.5-5.6G ED VR
A compact DX-format zoom lens with High Refractive Index lens element, ED glass and VR II image stabilization. With its 5.5x Telephoto Zoom this lens is designed to bring the action closer to the photographer thereby expanding photo and video opportunities. It has an angle of view equivalent to a focal length of 82.5 to 450mm in FX/35mm format D-SLR.
Vibration Reduction, engineered specifically for each VR NIKKOR lens, enables handheld shooting at up to 4 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper still images and video capture.
Guest Review Nick Melidonis on Gigapan Epic Pro
Nick Melidonis first impressions of the Gigapan Epic Pro

I recently purchased a new Gigapan Epic Pro from Ben Walton (Team Digital) and Ben and I put it briefly through its paces. The Gigapan quickly produced a large panorama of my home in Fremantle and although we used small jpegs so we could check the results quickly, I was most impressed with the results. Mind you, it is bulky and not a lightweight bit of kit, but for photographers that have a need to produce the very best large stitched images and take the guess work out of the process, the Gigapan is quite impressive and delivers the results.
Previously, to produce a large stitch that required more than one row of images, I had to set up and use some ‘Really Right Stuff’ pano equipment on a tripod (well made accessories but not exactly cheap) with some lengthy time and effort required to ensure all the images would stitch together well. Once I played around with the controls and prompts a few times from the Gigapan’s comprehensive check list on their small computer screen, I found the process of setting up and using the Gigapan less onerous than I first thought; in fact, it became easier and quicker each time I used it.
