Technology to capture, create, and communicate.

  Acorn Photo Agency   Photography

Robert Frith of Acorn Photo Agency is operating with two Eizo CG 19 ColorEdge Monitors for the viewing and colour analysis of his commercial Photography. Rob was amazed by the accuracy of the display. The same image displayed on two separate computers with different screens gave identical colour on screen. “Fantastic! I wonder how we ever got by without them. We now have a perfect match between the two screens,” says Rob.

DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY - UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA   Industry

The Department of Geology at the University of Western Australia has derived significant benefits from the introduction of digital cameras into its research and field activities.

Previously, images were shot on traditional photographic film and sent to outside labs for processing. This meant delays in obtaining images and no certainty that they would be of useable quality until they were returned. Furthermore, colour variation was often inadequate for analysis purposes.

By employing a high end digital camera for microscopic work the department has overcome these disadvantages.

Images are now available immediately and with the aid of software enhancement packages can be manipulated to assist in highlighting rock formations, mineral content and other attributes of interest.

Perth Pro Sales has been delighted to assist the department with much of their equipment needs and with the interfacing of this equipment with existing computer facilities.

DOCTOR ONG AND DOCTOR MANAF   Medical & Scientific

The dental and orthodontic practices of Doctors Ong and Manaf wanted to produce images of patient's teeth to highlight existing problems and to show what could be achieved with remedial work.

Their objective was to produce both before and after shots during the initial consultation so that patients could make an informed decision before committing to corrective treatment. Also required was data based software along with the equipment needed to write patients records on to CD.

Perth Pro Sales was able to address all these needs by installing an image capture system based on a high quality digital camera with flash. This was linked through an appropriate software package to a PC/Windows network.

  Fisher Photography

Geoff Fisher of Fisher Photography is operating with two Eizo CG19 ColorEdge Monitors.

Geoff has been extremely impressed by the accuracy of images shown on the two monitors. He has also found that the checks that he has done with his lab have shown that the change in colour calibration is nil. Geoff thinks that photographers have now become the “colour correctors” that the labs used to be. Using a colour-calibrated LCD screen Geoff is now able to comfortably spend relatively long periods of time in front of the screen without the eyestrain often experienced using traditional screens. Geoff has found that the monitor hoods, included with his Eizo monitors, are great for controlling any stray light from his work environment.

  Fitzgerald Photo Labs   Photography

Paul Maietta of Fitzgerald Photo Lab has his Pegasus and D-Lab printers calibrated to D65 output. Paul has an Eizo CG19 ColorEdge Monitor. The match from screen to print was extremely accurate using the automated Eizo calibration with Colour Navigator software.
His exact words were “Fantastic, unbelievable quality. A must have.”

  ILLUSTRATION   Photography

This high profile photographic and image production house in Wellington Street Perth has built an enviable reputation for meeting and exceeding customer expectations.

Illustrations has achieved this through a dedicated approach to quality and by aggressively embracing new technology whenever it can make a positive contribution to customer service.

When the first high quality digital cameras emerged a few years ago, Illustrations were quick to see the benefits they offered in comparison to the traditional film cameras they were using.

Immediate proofing, portability of images and greater control over image quality and content were just a few of these benefits.

These days a visit to the company reveals an impressive array of digital imaging equipment working in harmony with the best elements of traditional photography.

A total of four large format inkjet printers are regularly in use along with high quality film scanners and dye sub printers for proofing and catalogue prints.

The imaging systems at Illustrations are linked to an impressive network of Apple computers which are used for image enhancement purposes as well as for the communication of images to customers and to storage devices.

Perth Pro Sales has been delighted to have assisted Illustrations with the supply and installation of much of the equipment and the systems they use today.

  KEITH ELLIS ADVERTISING   Publishing

This progressive advertising agency provides an excellent example of how digital imaging has allowed an organization to reduce its reliance on outside contractors.

Previously, product was photographed in house then forwarded to a lab for processing and either scanning to disc or printing.

In an effort to reduce turnaround time and gain greater control over the imaging process, Keith Ellis Advertising with the help of Perth pro Sales carried out extensive testing of a Kodak DCS digital camera. The objective of this testing was to ensure that the quality of the images would meet the exacting standards needed for product presentation.

The company was delighted with the results and proceeded to install a full photographic studio including camera, lighting, backdrops and a product display table.

This, together with an Apple computer network has enabled Keith Ellis Advertising to take full control of its imaging needs.

  MEDICAL ILLUSTRATIONS   Medical & Scientific

The Medical Illustrations Department of Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Nedlands plays a vital role in providing high quality images for the benefit of doctors, patients, teaching staff and the hospitals management.

Images are produced on CD for computer projection, on slides for traditional projection or in print form up to poster size for display purposes.

In addition, images are made available across the hospital network and for transmission to outside consultants via modem hook up.

The Medical Illustrations Department has embraced digital imaging technology with enthusiasm, clearly appreciating the many benefits it has to offer the medical environment.

Faster production time, the capacity for detailed image analysis and portability of images as a result of computer networking are just three such benefits.

The department now has at its disposal an impressive array of output devices including a film recorder, a Fuji (direct from digital) printer and a Kodak large format poster printer and is well equipped to meet the needs of its internal customers.

Perth Pro Sales are pleased to have been closely involved with the departments transition from traditional photographic technology to Digital Imaging.

  PETERS & BROWNES   Industry

Peters & Browns are a well known Western Australian manufacturer of dairy based products that need to produce images on a regular basis for a variety of purposes. Product promotion, display material and significant company events are just three such examples.

When Perth Pro Sales was approached to assist, the company already had access to graphic arts and desktop publishing skills in house but were reliant on outside photographers to provide the primary images. The company saw significant benefits in assuming control of all aspects of the imaging process including greater flexibility over image content and a faster turnaround time.

As a result, the company invested in a Kodak DCS 460 digital camera and dye sub printer and proceeded to install a working photographic studio.

Today, the Peters & Browns Group have the capacity to deliver professional imaging services in a timely manner. They are able to exercise much greater control over image colour and content and are better placed to protect the confidentiality of new product developments as they arise.

  ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY   Other

Given the nature of the subject matter it is not suprising that some of the most dynamic images we have seen have been produced by the Australian Navy's media centre on Garden Island. the centre is charged with the responsibility of producing images for publicity purposes, for education and to commemorate key events and this it does to great effect by employing the latest in Digital Imaging technology . Images are scanned to apple workstations via either a kodak or a flextight film scanner where they are optimised and catalogued prior to output. The centre has a choice of output devices from large format inkjet printers to a fujix PG3000 photo printer, all of which have been configured to maximise image quality.

Perth Pro Sales have been delighted to assist the Navy in their quest for image excellence.

  SOUTH WEST TIMES   Industry

The South West Times has taken a progressive approach to adopting Digital Imaging technology and is now reaping the rewards.

Initially, images were captured on traditional photographic film and scanned into computers by a high end film scanner with the resulting files being forwarded to the graphic arts department.

By investing in a range of digital cameras the company has been able to appropriately tailor the cost and quality of its image capture activities to its needs. Photographers employed by the newspaper for example now operate in the field with Kodak DCS cameras that are capable of recording high resolution images of stationary and moving subjects in varying light conditions. Feature reporters on the other hand find mid range digital cameras more than sufficient for their needs on most occasions.

Digital Image capture has delivered a number of benefits to the South West Times including fast turnaround time, image enhancement capability and improved portability of images via computer network.

Happily the company also notes a positive impact on operating costs with regard to this aspect of operations.

  STUDIO CLASSIQUE   Photography

Owned and operated by Michael VanDerZanden, Studio Classique is a high profile business specializing in portrait and glamour photography.

The company is well known for their aggressive marketing and advertising campaigns which are designed to keep them firmly in the public eye.

Michael has the same pro-active approach to operational matters and is quick to embrace new technology where he believes it will extend or enhance the quality of service offered.

The business initially made the transition from photographic to digital imaging in order to reduce the time between image capture and the presentation of proofs for viewing. Like other businesses that have adopted this technology however, Studio Classique soon realized there was more to be gained than just time.

The studio offers an extensive image enhancement service which can be performed in conjunction with the client at the time of the shoot. Customising and retouching of old or blemished prints is expertly undertaken with finished images being produced onto a screen using a high quality computer projector.

The service offered by Studio Classique is particularly appreciated by country clients who can view the finished images and place their orders before leaving the studio.

The hub of the studios imaging system is a high quality Kodak digital camera and dye sub printer which are both linked to an Apple computing network.

Studio Classique has well and truly made the transition to digital imaging and Perth Pro Sales has been proud to have been associated with it.

The magic brains of Glenn and Lindy Capelli

Team Digitals Martin Healey visited the True Learning Centre and asked the Capellis to talk about their favourite bits of technology.

If you wanted to place Glenn Capelli in a pigeon-hole then you might describe him as a corporate trainer, educator, public speaker, or business consultant. This would not however do justice to the mans versatility and his passion.

Glenn works from his home in Perth surrounded by a myriad of books stored neatly but in no particular order (Edward de Bono once told him that he himself read prolifically and randomly). His suitcase stands in the corner partly packed and ready for his next trip and his Apple PowerBook lies open, hinting at the excitement of his current assignment. Tomorrow he might be in Bassendean, Budapest, Townsville, Taiwan, Perth, or Prague.

I help people learn and to think, says Glenn. That could mean flying to London to help top executives at Ernst and Young bring clarity to their presentations, or travelling to Pembroke Shire on the East Coast to arm primary schoolkids with learning skills. Glenn is well-known in Perth for his work with young people: he tells them about the unique talents they have and tells them in words and music that they have a magic brain.

Glenn says Keynote, Apples presentation software, is his favourite piece of technology. People always ask me what software I use in my presentations. I am happy to tell them but sometimes I think I might be giving away my competitive edge!

Lindy chooses Adobes InDesign as her favourite piece of technology. Lindy puts together training material, promotional booklets, CD covers, and a variety of marketing material which all show the mark of a creative mind, I love InDesign, says Lindy, I can combine all sorts of material from different places and lay them out exactly as I would like.

Glenn and Lindy are Team Digitals perfect customers. They use their technology to capture, create, and communicate and they do it with great gusto. Their arsenal of technology includes wireless networking, colour printing, digital video, graphics tablets, and iPods!

The Department of Veterinary Studies at Murdoch University is recognized as one of the leading vet science schools in Australia.

To help sustain this reputation, they provide a range of imaging support services for the benefit of lecturers and students within the department.

Not surprisingly, the Department of Vet studies have keenly embraced digital imaging technology as a way of improving this aspect of its operations. The change from traditional black and white and colour film processing to digital imaging has been a dramatic one for the department which now has in its imaging arsenal, digital cameras, scanners, dye sub printers, inkjet printers, film recorders and a sophisticated Apple computer network.

Perth Pro Sales has been delighted to have assisted the department with its transition to digital imaging.

  Vinten Browning   Publishing

Steve Browning is a writer working in Perth. Well, physically that is. Now hes found he can virtually work anywhere.

Using Apples iChat AV has dramatically changed the way I work, he told Team Digitals Martin Healey.

Coupled with a G4 Powerbook, a fast ADSL connection and the tiny iSight camera, Steve can now work from his Hills-based office with an advertising agency team in Perth, clients across Australia and on projects with an agency in Tokyo.

I use my iSight camera every day, says Steve. It might be for a quick catch up with my agency colleagues in Perth, or to take a brief from the Tokyo team I am part of. Because Tokyo is only one hour ahead of Perth, the set up is ideal.

When I first started using iChat AV, I was amazed at having real time audio and video streaming half way around the world. Once Id got over that novelty, I found that the software actually allowed me to do a hell of a lot more than talk and watch.

During a typical work session, while Im talking to the Tokyo guys, we send each other files, pictures, sounds and movies straight through the iChat interface without having to email them. They simply appear on my local desktop. Its a great way of sharing ideas, thoughts and concepts while discussing them. Even holding up storyboards to the iSight camera is quick and easy and works remarkably well.

Steve is also collaborating on a book with a writer in Melbourne. For this, he uses the Collabowriter software built into the specialist writing software Final Draft.

Collobowriter is weird until you get used to it, he says. You can work on a Chapter of a book or a whole screenplay in real time with another writer anywhere in the world. I type a line, then sit back, and watch the other guy write the next line. Then its my turn again. It sure beats emailing dozens of versions of the book to and fro. Its also a lot more fun and a highly addictive way of writing. Having an iChat session open at the same time means I can see what my co-writers up to. Given his at-desk habits, Im glad this is an optional extra.

Steves hardware setup consists of a G4 Powerbook, 20 Apple cinema display, an Airport wireless network, ADSL modem, two 40MB external hard drives, an iPod, an iSight and an old iMac. He has been a Macintosh user since he bought his first LC with a 20MB hard drive.
