Tamrom 24-70mm F2.8 VC review

Venture2470

Heres a section of a review that Seng Mah from Venture Photography Workshop did on the Tamron 24-70mm SP f2.8 VC lens. There is a link to the full review on the bottom of the page.

In a nutshell, this lens gives you bang-for-your-buck value! I’ll write more about this lens in detail below, but for those of you who suffer from the dreaded TLDR syndrome, here are some key points from my review of the lens.

PROS:

  • The VC is just amazing! And so quiet you hardly know it’s running! Imagine being able to shoot hand held up to 2 stops slower than recommended shutter speed for hand held. Is this not awesome? Photos below will prove this.
  • The lens is sharp, sharp, sharp wide open. I had no compunctions about shooting at f2.8 in low light and using the VC to help me get great shots hand held.
  • Autofocus is smooth. It’s not as fast as its Canikon equivalent but it’s still very responsive.
  • The price! It retails for around $1300 (local store price) and is great value for all the bells and whistles it provides.

CONS:

  • It’s a big lens – with an 82mm thread. Which means that if you’re going to use filters, you’ll need to buy them for this thread.
  • Diffraction starts to kick in at f11.0, which might be a minor annoyance if you’re thinking of using this lens for landscape photography.
  • There’s quite a bit of edge distortion when shooting at 24mm, but nothing too dramatic (which can’t be fixed with lens correction functions in software).

Team Digital have these amazing lens in Nikon and Canon mounts for only $ 1199.00
