Photoshop — Essentials

Photoshop CS6This course runs from 9:00am to 5:00pm on Monday 2nd & Tuesday 3rd November.

This is the first in our Photoshop course series. It provides instruction on how to create professional-looking images for both print & the Web.


After completing this 2-day course, participants will be able to:

Managing Files in a Production Workflow
·      import, Export, and Organise Files
·      use the Crop tool
·      determine an image’s resolution and dimensions
·      resize images with and without resampling
·      save Images for the Web
·      save Images for Print
·      format Images for Other Programs
·      print single and multiple images on a page or export them to a PDF file intended for printing.


Adobe® Photoshop CC will be used in class. It is much less applicable to earlier versions of the software.




Photoshop for Photographers — Intermediate
Nov 4 @ 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Photoshop CS6This course runs from 6:00pm to 8:30pm on Wednesday 4th, 11th, 18th, & 25th November, & Wednesday 2nd December.

This is a follow-on from the “Photoshop for Photographers: Fundamentals” short course – participants will further develop their Photoshop skills & knowledge and practice its application to enhance and retouch photographs.

Content will include; using Adjustment layers & Blending modes, creating composites, automating with Actions, Droplets, & the Batch and Image Processor commands; use Content Aware Scale & Fill; simulate a shallow Depth of Field with Lens Blur, focus stack to expand the Depth of Field, stitch images for panoramas, utilise masks to build a Photo Montage e.g. replace a sky, construct a Picture Package with Smart Objects, utilise Layer blend modes to add depth & complexity into artistic images, employ a range of sharpening techniques, retouch with perspective using Vanishing Point, and create a photographer’s comp card.

Adobe® Photoshop CC (v13) will be used in class. The content is much less applicable to earlier versions of the software.



Creative Video
Nov 5 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

JM_001This course runs from 6:00pm to 9:00pm on Thursday 5th November.

This course is designed for people who are wanting to shoot simple videos for product reviews, interviews, behind-the-scenes, etc. using their DSLR camera. Our main objective is to get past the technical considerations and to focus on the creative applications and use of a moving image.




By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand how to shoot video with a DSLR camera
  • Shoot steadily – hand-held, with a monopod and a tripod, as well as using sliders and Steady cams etc.
  • Decide what the best file formats are for shooting video
  • Be able to compare resolutions and frame rates for specific applications
  • Audio capture for dialogue and atmosphere
  • Understand the use of ISO in video shooting
  • Understand the role of aperture (ƒ-stop) when shooting video – and how to control it
  • Learn about the ideal lenses for video
  • Control aperture and therefore the depth of field in different shooting situations
  • Understand the need for different angles, shots and points of view in order to make an interesting video production.



WAPF Judges seminar

WAPF-JudgingAttention would-be judges. The WAPF has organised a series of judging courses aimed at expanding the pool of judges available for club judging.

The number of courses will depend upon demand, and there are some prerequisites for entry.

Each course is approx 9 hrs of in-class instruction (3 sessions of 3-hours each) plus shared homework with 2 or 3 other attendees. There is a limit of 12 per class, so get your enrolments in quickly. An afternoon course will be offered if the morning one gets close to full.

The cost is $90 each.

There is a provision for 2 members per club to be subsidised. Check with your club secretary to see if this applies to you.

InDesign — Essentials

InDesign CS6This course runs from 9:00am to 5:00pm on Monday 9th & Tuesday 10th November.

This is the first in our InDesign course series.

It provides instruction on how to create professional-looking documents for both print & web download.

In this 2-day course, participants will: create documents and document presets; create and place text; place graphics and other InDesign pages; and work with colour swatches. They will explore position elements precisely by using guides and the Control panel; and use master pages.

They’ll thread text between text frames, add jump lines, and use columns in text frames; use the Paragraph Formatting controls; use Find/Change to replace formatting; and create and edit paragraph and character styles. They’ll position text in text frames and format frame edges; place Photoshop images in documents, set text wrap, modify graphics, and nest frames; group objects and manipulate objects within a group; and create layers and assign objects to them. They’ll print documents, create print presets, and export documents to PDF; and prepare documents for commercial printing. They’ll create and edit vector paths; create and edit clipping paths; and wrap type on a path. They’ll also manually resize type; use Quick Apply; create nested styles and GREP styles; create path-based text wraps and convert type to outlines; and precisely control leading, hyphenation, justification, and horizontal spacing. They will create, modify, and format tables; import Microsoft Word documents and map Word styles to InDesign styles; add headers and footers to tables; merge table cells; add editorial notes; and create table styles.

Photoshop — for the Web / Multimedia
Nov 11 @ 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Photoshop CS6is a continuation of our Photoshop course series. It focuses on specific training needed to create & manage images for the Web and Multimedia presentations such as MS PowerPoint, Apple Keynote, OpenOffice Impress, etc.

This course runs from 9:00am to 5:00pm on Wednesday 11th November.

In this 1-day course, participants will: prepare images for the web; optimise images by saving them in different formats and applying transparency to them; apply color management techniques, alter image brightness, and ensure color consistency to create images that are attractive to the widest possible audience who use different platforms such as Macintosh and Windows; create web page layouts; export a web page & create animations for web and mobile devices.

Adobe® Photoshop CC will be used in class. It is much less applicable to earlier versions of the software.



Canon Flash Day

Speedlight portraitThis course runs from 6:00pm to 8:30pm on Thursday 12th November.

Join the team from The Canon Collective for an evening of Portrait Photography.

In this 2.5 hour workshop you’ll learn how to master portrait flash photography. You’ll be taken through a variety of different techniques and shown how to make use of flash with the Canon 600 EX and ST-E3-RT wireless flash system and a range of soft boxes and reflectors. You will learn how to properly light and photograph portraits. We’ll demonstrate the key lighting techniques to build professionally lit results using 1 to up to 6 Speedlites.
